Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers on capabilities, quoting, materials, lead times, and how Partwork handles production from prototype through batch manufacturing.
What manufacturing services does Partwork offer?
Partwork is an on-demand manufacturing platform in India offering CNC machining (milling and turning), 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS, MJF, and DMLS), and sheet metal fabrication. We serve everything from single prototypes to production batches, with no minimum order quantity.
What are the advantages of sourcing from Partwork over traditional vendors?
Traditional sourcing means slow RFQs, opaque pricing, and constant follow-ups. Partwork replaces that with instant online quotes, transparent pricing, real-time order tracking, and a single purchase order for your entire bill of materials across multiple processes, with no minimum order required.
How does Partwork's instant quotation system work?
Upload your STEP or STL file, select your process, material, tolerance, and surface finish, and get a price instantly, with no calls or emails needed. For most parts, you can confirm and order directly. For complex geometries, a Partwork engineer may review and refine the quote before it is finalised.
For which services does Partwork offer instant quotes?
Instant quotes are currently available for CNC machining and 3D printing. Instant quoting for sheet metal fabrication is coming soon. For now, sheet metal enquiries are handled by our engineering team.
Can I place an order directly from the instant quote?
Yes. For most parts you can order directly from the platform. For complex geometries or tight-tolerance features that need additional review, a Partwork engineer will adjust the quote before confirmation. You always see the final price before committing.
What materials and tolerances can Partwork achieve with CNC machining?
Partwork supports a wide material range for CNC machining:
- Aluminium alloys: 6061, 7075-T6, 6082
- Carbon and alloy steels: EN8, EN19/4140, IS2062
- Stainless steels: SS304, SS316, 17-4 PH
- Titanium: Grade 2, Grade 5
- Superalloys: Inconel 718, Hastelloy C276
- Brass, copper, and engineering plastics: PEEK, Delrin, PTFE, Nylon
Standard tolerances of +/-0.125 mm are achievable across most materials. Tight tolerances down to +/-0.025 mm are available for critical features depending on geometry and material.
Why does Partwork only accept STEP files, not native formats like SLDPRT?
STEP (ISO 10303) is the universal, vendor-neutral standard for manufacturing data exchange. It exports faithfully from major CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360, Creo, and NX, with no geometry loss and no version compatibility issues. Native formats behave differently across software versions, while STEP eliminates that risk. For 3D printing, STL files are also accepted.
Does Partwork manufacture all parts in-house?
Some services are fulfilled at Partwork's own facility. For orders requiring specific capabilities or regional proximity, parts are routed to our vetted manufacturing partner network across India, selected through capability audits and monitored on quality performance.
How does Partwork ensure quality when manufacturing through partners?
All parts, whether made in-house or through a partner, are held to the same Partwork quality standard. This includes dimensional inspection against your drawing or model, surface finish verification, and a pre-dispatch quality check carried out by both the partner and the Partwork quality team.
What are the minimum lead times for Partwork's services?
Typical minimum lead times are:
- CNC machining: 2 to 3 business days
- 3D printing: from 1 business day
- Sheet metal fabrication: 2 to 3 business days
Actual lead time depends on order quantity, part complexity, material availability, and delivery location. Final lead time is confirmed at order placement.
Does Partwork design parts, or do I need to provide a design file?
Partwork is a manufacturing service, not a design bureau. A 3D model file is required to place an order: STEP for CNC, and STEP or STL for 3D printing. If you do not have a design file yet, you will need to work with a CAD designer before submitting.
Can customers outside India order from Partwork?
The instant quoting system is currently configured for customers in India. International customers are welcome to write to admin@partwork.io to discuss requirements and receive a custom quote.
