Overview
Detailed Material Analysis
Engineering plastics are a group of plastic materials that have better mechanical and/or thermal properties than commodity plastics. They are designed to replace metals in demanding applications where weight reduction, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, or low friction is required. CNC machining is the ideal process for high-precision plastic parts where injection molding tolerances or quantities are not suitable.
| Property | Specification |
|---|---|
| Weight | Ultra Lightweight – 1/7th the weight of steel |
| Electrical Insulation | Excellent – naturally non-conductive |
| Chemical Resistance | Superior – resists acids, solvents, and fuels (mostly) |
| Friction | Low – self-lubricating grades available (Delrin, PTFE) |
| Machinability | Excellent – very fast machining, but requires sharp tools |
| Stability | Fair to Good – sensitive to moisture and temperature changes |
| Lead Time | 3-7 working days (standard) |
| Typical Price (India) | Low to High (Delrin: ₹300/kg, PEEK: ₹8,000+/kg) |
Available Grades & Standards
We offer a wide selection of grades to meet specific engineering requirements, from general purpose to high-performance flight-grade alloys.
| Grade | Category | Key Features | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| POM / Delrin (Acetal) | Homopolymer | Best all-round machinability. Stiff, low friction, dimensionally stable | Gears, bearings, bushings, precision parts, electrical insulators |
| Nylon 6 / PA6 | Polyamide | High strength, toughness, and wear resistance. Absorbs moisture | Wear pads, rollers, heavy-duty gears, structural plastic parts |
| HDPE | Polyethylene | Excellent chemical resistance, food safe, low cost. Difficult to hold tight tolerances | Chemical tanks, food cutting boards, wear strips, chutes |
| PEEK | Polyetheretherketone | High performance. High temp (250°C), superior chemical resistance, stiff | Aerospace, medical implants, oil & gas valve seats, semiconductor |
| PTFE (Teflon) | Fluoropolymer | Lowest friction, highest chemical resistance, high temp (260°C). Soft | Seals, gaskets, valve seats, non-stick applications |
| PC (Polycarbonate) | Transparent | High impact strength, optical clarity, heat resistant | Sight glasses, safety shields, medical devices, manifolds |
| ABS | Terpolymer | Good impact strength, easy to machine/bond. Low cost | Housings, prototypes, covers |
| PVC | Vinyl | Cheap, chemical resistant (acids). Good electrical insulation | Chemical plumbing, tanks, electrical housings |
| PP (Polypropylene) | Polyolefin | Excellent chemical resistance, fatigue resistance (living hinges). Lightweight | Chemical fittings, tanks, laboratory equipment |
| Acrylic (PMMA) | Transparent | Optical clarity, UV stable, easy to polish | Lenses, light pipes, display cases |

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about machining Engineering Plastics Machining.
Yes, we machine Polycarbonate and Acrylic. To achieve optical clarity, we recommend Vapor Polishing (for PC) or Mechanical Polishing (for Acrylic) as a post-processing step.
Plastics can melt if machined too fast (heat buildup), deform if held too tightly (clamping forces), or crack (acrylic). They also absorb moisture (Nylon) or have high thermal expansion. Expertise is required to hold tight tolerances.
Yes, we offer FDA-compliant grades of Delrin, HDPE, PEEK, and PP. Please specify 'Food Grade' when requesting a quote so we ensure the correct raw material certification.
PEEK is very expensive (₹8,000-15,000/kg) due to its high performance. Delrin and Nylon are mid-range. HDPE and PVC are the most economical.
Weight reduction (plastics are ~15% weight of steel), electrical insulation, chemical resistance (acids destroy steel), noise reduction (gears), and lower friction (self-lubricating).
